ANN ARBOR, MICH. - Duke's Amanda Johnson won in both singles and doubles on Thursday at the 2003 ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. The senior teamed with freshman Tory Zawacki in doubles to win in the first round of action at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
Johnson picked up a 6-2, 6-2 singles victory over 14th-ranked Jessica Carleton of UCLA in round one on Thursday and will next battle 27th-ranked Tammy Encina of Tennessee in round two. The victory for the Bettendorf, Iowa product was her 97th of her career.
In doubles play, Johnson and Zawacki earned a hard-fought, 9-8 victory over Nikkita Fountain and Larikah Russell of Southern Nazarene to advance to the quarterfinals. The Duke duo will next go up against the top-seeded Vanderbilt team of Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos, who picked up an 8-0 victory over Jenny Kuhn and Julie Smekodub of Tulane.
