ANN ARBOR, MICH./TEMPE, ARIZ. - At the 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Collegiate Championships, Duke University senior Amanda Johnson collected two singles wins to advance to the semifinals at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
A Bettendorf, Iowa product, ninth-ranked Johnson knocked off 27th-ranked Tammy Encina of Tennessee (6-3, 6-4) and defeated eighth-ranked Alexis Gordon of Florida (7-5, 6-4) to advance. Johnson now owns 99 career singles wins and if she wins on Saturday she will become only the 15th Duke player to notch 100 wins in a career. On Saturday, Johnson will take on 40th-ranked Anda Perianu.
Johnson also teamed with freshman Tory Zawacki in doubles action and knocked off their second top seed of the fall season. The Duke duo defeated top-seeded Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos of Vanderbilt, 8-5, and will next play fourth-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones and Sasha Podkolzina of California on Saturday.
At the Arizona State Thunderbirds Invitational, both Julia Smith and Jennifer Zika advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles action on Friday. Smith, who is seeded second, knocked off Anne Claire Ortiz Luis of UNLV (6-0, 6-0) and Nicole Havlicek of California (6-3, 6-1), while Zika defeated Gretchen Haynor of Purdue (7-5, 6-2) and Blair Disesa of Rice (6-3, 6-3).
Top-seeded Saras Arasu won 6-0, 6-2 over Cindy Treber of UNLV (6-0, 6-2), but fell in the second round to Joslynn Burkett of Arizona State (6-2, 6-2). Both Parker Goyer and Kristin Cargill each lost in the first round to Rebecca Rankin of Arizona State (6-3, 6-0) and Jody Scheldt of California (6-3, 6-1), respectively.
In the singles consolation first round, Goyer defeated Haley McIver of Kansas State (6-1, 6-4) and Cargill notched a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ebru Burduroglu of Arizona State.
In doubles play, both Duke teams earned victories on the day. The tandem of Smith and Zika registered an 8-1 victory over Burduroglu (Arizona State) and Amy Walgenbach (Purdue), while Arasu and Cargill defeated UNLV's Cindy Treber and Gyorgyi Zsiros, 8-4.
