ANN ARBOR, MICH./TEMPE, ARIZ. - Duke University senior Amanda Johnson lost in the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Collegiate Championships on Saturday to 40th-ranked Anda Perianu of Oklahoma, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 at the University of Michigan Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Johnson remains one win away from becoming the 15th Duke player to reach the 100-win mark in school history. In doubles action, the Duke tandem of Johnson and Tory Zawacki fell to Jackie Carleton and Lauren Fisher of UCLA, 8-2 in the semifinals.
In the Arizona State University Thunderbird Invitational, freshman Jennifer Zika defeated teammate Julia Smith (6-3, 2-6, 6-0) to advance to the finals of the singles bracket. Zika, a native of Wels, Austria, also knocked off Shawna Zuccarini of Purdue, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals, while Smith defeated Nicole Havlicek of California (5-7, 7-5, 6-3). In the finals on Sunday, Zika will battle Jody Scheidt of California.
In doubles play, Smith and Zika lost, 8-4, to Paulina Castillejos and Maria Rosenberg of Kansas State and Saras Arasu and Kristin Cargill lost 8-2 to Joslynn Burkett and Sabrina Capannolo of Arizona State.
