DURHAM, N.C. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released the regional rankings this week with five Blue Devils listed among the top-30 in the Southeast Region. Duke senior Amanda Johnson highlighted the rankings as she was listed No. 1 in singles and No. 1 in doubles along with freshman Tory Zawacki.
Other Blue Devils in the singles rankings were Zawacki (8), freshman Jennifer Zika (18), Saras Arasu (20) and Kristin Cargill (27).
Johnson, a Bettendorf, Iowa product, carded an 8-4 singles mark in the fall, while advancing to the semifinals of the National Indoor Collegiate Championship and the finals of the Adidas Tennis Classic. Johnson also advanced to the consolation finals of the Riviera All-America and registered seven victories in the fall against ranked opponents.
Zawacki was tabbed eighth in the southeast after collecting a 3-4 singles mark. A Union, N.J., native, Zawacki opened her collegiate career with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over 79th-ranked Shana McElroy of Wisconsin. Zika, out of Wels, Austria, had the best finish to the fall season for the Blue Devils with five straight wins at the Arizona State Thunderbird Individual. She finished the fall season with a 10-4 record and winner of the singles title at the ASU Invitational.
Arasu and Cargill finished the fall season with 6-5 and 4-5 singles marks, respectively.
In doubles play, the Duke duo of Johnson and Zawacki were tabbed No. 1 after defeating two top-seeded teams in the Riviera All-America and the National Indoor Collegiate Championship. The tandem finished the fall with a 6-2 mark.
Duke will open the spring on Jan. 24 and 25 in Nashville, Tenn. The Blue Devils will take on Baylor and Vanderbilt at 12:00 p.m. on both days.
