CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the second time this season, the fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team downed its arch-rival, eighth-ranked North Carolina, on Thursday with a 6-1 victory at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Blue Devils improve to 15-1 overall, 2-0 in ACC action, while the Tar Heels fall to 8-4, 0-1.
The doubles action was very tight with Duke winning at the third position as 37th-ranked Julia Smith/Katie Granson downed Marlene Mejia/Lee Bairos by an 8-6 score. North Carolina responded by knocking off Duke's second-ranked tandem of Amanda Johnson/Julie DeRoo, 8-6. The doubles point came down to the second slot with the Blue Devils' 10th-ranked Kelly McCain/Hillary Adams going up against 23rd-ranked Kate Pinchbeck/Kendrick Bunn. McCain/Adams of Duke were able to notch a 7-6 lead before North Carolina evened the score at 7-7. In the tiebreaker, the Blue Devil duo jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the Tar Heels charged back to cut the Duke advantage to 6-5. Adams, a senior from Acton, Mass. then nailed an overhead smash to clinch the victory for the Blue Devils.
Duke quickly clinched the match in singles as the Blue Devils notched wins at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. Sophomore 62nd-ranked Katie Blaszak (Fairfax, Va.) started things out with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bunn at the sixth slot. Then, Granson (Bethlehem, Pa.) knocked off Kline (6-2, 6-0) at No. 4, 86th-ranked DeRoo (Ecully, France) defeated Bairos (6-2, 6-0) at No. 5 and 27th-ranked Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) cruised past 42nd-ranked Mejia (6-2, 6-1).
North Carolina next got on the board with a 6-0, 7-5 victory at the third position as 67th-ranked Mojzis won over 57th-ranked Smith. Second-ranked McCain came back from losing the first set 4-6 to get the victory 7-5, 10-3 over 11th-ranked Pinchbeck at No. 1 to close out the match.
With the win, the Blue Devils receive 1.5 points towards the Carlyle Cup competition between Duke and North Carolina sponsored by Carlyle & Company. Duke now leads 18.5 to 15.5. The Blue Devils have now won the past 16 regular season matches in a row against North Carolina. Duke owns a 144-2 record against ACC opponents dating back to 1989.
Duke will next host 10th-ranked Tennessee on Sunday at 12:00 PM. The match will be played outside at the Ambler Tennis Stadium.
