DURHAM, N.C. - Duke Women's Tennis Head Coach Jamie Ashworth announced on Tuesday the signing of high school standout Tory Zawacki to a national letter of intent to attend Duke University in the fall and play tennis.
"Anytime we can add someone to our program with the experience Tory has on the national and international level is a great addition," said Ashworth. "The biggest thing she adds to our program is she is a very good doubles player. We have had a lot of very good players come into our program, but we haven't had anyone come in with the doubles success she has had."
Zawacki, a 5-10 native of Union, N.J., is one of the top American junior players and currently lives in Hilton Head, S.C., while training at the Van der Meer Tennis Academy.
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Federation (ITF), Zawacki has been ranked as high as 41st and in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) as high as 490th. She had a 2002 national ranking of No. 5 in the Girls 18s.
Zawacki won the USTA Pro Circuit $10,000 Satellite in Baltimore in July of 2002 and this past September played in the junior U.S. Open. She advanced to the doubles finals along with Shadisha Robinson at the U.S. Open and also played in the junior Wimbledon, Australia Open, French Open, Italian Open and Astrid Bowl during 2001-02.
The 2001 campaign was her breakout year on the national scene as Zawacki placed third at the K-Swiss Championships, fourth at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Super National Hardcourts, won the USTA International Hardcourts, finalist at the Super National Clay Court Championships and was the doubles winner at the Bush Florida Open. She also placed fifth in singles at the Bush Florida Open and won the doubles at the Chanda Rubin ITF in South Carolina.
Zawacki lettered two years at Oak Knoll High School before heading to Hilton Head, S.C. At Oak Knoll, Zawacki registered a 58-0 ledger and was the New Jersey State High School Champion in 1999 and 2000. She was also named the New Jersey Athlete of the Month in October 2000 and the New Jersey Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000.
"A lot of junior players play their best tennis at the age of 12, 14 and 16, but I think Tory is the opposite," said Ashworth. "I think she has her best tennis in front of her and that is very noticeable with her results over the past two years."
