DURHAM,N.C. - Sophomore forward Carolyn Riggs made her presence felt in the season opener for the Duke women's soccer team on Friday as the Indianapolis, Ind., product connected on two goals in a span of a minute and 13 seconds to lead the Blue Devils to a 6-0 blanking of Campbell (0-1) at Koskinen Stadium.
Riggs was inserted in the Duke lineup at the 25:03 mark in the first half and in the next five minutes the 2002 All-ACC Freshman selection found the back of the net twice to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage. Duke led 2-0 at the end of the first stanza, which included a 16-0 shot margin.
The second half was much like the first as the Blue Devils added four goals with freshman Lauren Tippets getting things started at the 47:49 mark from an assist from junior Casey McCluskey. In two exhibition contests and one regular season match, Tippets has collected five goals for Duke. Other Blue Devils adding goals on the night were sophomore Shelly Marshall, McCluskey and freshman Sarah McCabe, while Darby Kroyer, Kate Seibert, Gwendolyn Oxenham and Katie Roark registered assists.
"Obviously, I am very happy to start the season off with a win," said head coach Robbie Church. "The team played very focused, were prepared and played at a high level for the entire match, which was exciting to see. I really liked how we finished the second half and glad we were able to play a lot of players."
The Blue Devils (1-0) improve to 8-0 in season openers at Koskinen Stadium and now lead the overall series with Campbell, 4-0. For the game, Duke outshot the Fighting Camels 28-1. Senior Thora Helgadottir started in goal for the Blue Devils followed by Kate Straka and Alexis Morant.
Duke will next host fourth-ranked Texas at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday at 7:00 PM. Last season, Texas scored a goal in the 86th minute to down the Blue Devils 2-1 in Austin, Texas.
