DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's tennis team will open the 2003 fall season on Thursday as the Blue Devils will compete in the Adidas Tennis Classic in Peachtree City, Ga. Six different Blue Devils will see action over the weekend-- senior Amanda Johnson, junior Saras Arasu, freshman Tory Zawacki, freshman Jennifer Zika, freshman Kristin Cargill and freshman Parker Goyer.
The tournament features players from Florida, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Northwestern and Wisconsin.
In the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, Duke boasts four ranked singles players. Johnson highlights the ranked Blue Devils as the Bettendorf, Iowa product was listed ninth. The three-time All-America is coming off a junior season where she compiled a 28-9 singles mark and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Individual Tournament.
Also ranked for the Blue Devil women include Arasu (No. 43), Julia Smith (No. 45) and Katie Blaszak (No. 49). Arasu, a Tampa, Fla., native, registered a 23-13 singles mark last season, while Smith and Blaszak turned in a 16-10 and 18-5 records, respectively. Both Blaszak and Smith will not be competing this weekend due to injuries.
The Blue Devils will travel with three doubles teams to open the season--Johnson/Cargill, Zawacki/Zika and Arasu/Goyer. All three teams are different than those listed in the preseason rankings. The tandem of Johnson/Zawacki are 19th, the duo of Smith/Zika are 47th and the team of Blaszak/Cargill were tied 50th.
Duke is coming off advancing to the NCAA Final Four for the sixth time in school history and tied an ACC record with 30 victories. The Blue Devils return four of nine letterwinners from last season as head coach Jamie Ashworth enters his eighth season at Duke.
