DURHAM, N.C. - The preseason edition of the men's and women's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings have been released for the 2003-04 campaign.
For the Duke women, senior Amanda Johnson highlights the ranked Blue Devils as the Bettendorf, Iowa product was listed ninth. The senior is coming off a junior season where she compiled a 28-9 singles mark and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Individual Tournament. Johnson earned ITA All-America and All-ACC accolades for the third straight year.
Also ranked for the Blue Devil women include junior Saras Arasu (No. 43), Julia Smith (No. 45) and Katie Blaszak (No. 49). Arasu, a Tampa, Fla., native, registered a 23-13 singles mark last season, while Smith and Blaszak turned in a 16-10 and 18-5 records, respectively.
In doubles action, Duke will have all new doubles teams in 2003-04, but three were still ranked in the preseason. The tandem of Johnson and freshman Tory Zawacki are 19th, the duo of Smith and freshman Jennifer Zika are 47th and the team of Blaszak and freshman Kristin Cargill were tied 50th.
In the men's rankings, senior Phillip King was tabbed 15th and sophomore Ludovic Walter was listed as 38th nationally in singles. King, a Long Beach, Calif., product, enters his final year with the Blue Devils after compiling a 15-8 singles mark and being named ITA All-America for the third straight year. A native of Vannes, France, Walter led Duke with a 34-10 singles mark last season as a freshman, while earning All-ACC accolades.
Listed in the doubles rankings were two Blue Devil tandems-- King and sophomore Stephen Amritraj (No. 11) and Walter and junior Jason Zimmermann. This will be the first year King and Amritraj will play together, but the duo of Walter/Zimmerman turned in a 12-2 mark last season.
