CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Duke women's soccer team continued its stellar play on Friday as the Blue Devils kicked off the Nike Carolina Classic with a 3-1 victory over 18th-ranked Nebraska (2-1) at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Blue Devils (3-0) dominated the action early as freshman Rachel-Rose Cohen placed a perfect feed down the right side of the field to senior Gwendolyn Oxenham, who then hit defender Kate Seibert for her first career goal at the 17:32 mark.
Freshman Darby Kroyer then put the Blue Devils up 2-0 with a 40-yard bomb from the middle of the field past Nebraska goalkeeper Brooke Bredenberg. The goal in the 22nd minute by Kroyer, a San Ramon, Calif., product, was her second in as many games.
For the third straight contest, sophomore Carolyn Riggs found the back of the net at the 34:50 mark as the Indianapolis, Ind., native scored on breakaway up the middle off an assist from junior Lauren Simel. Riggs now leads the team with four goals in three matches.
Nebraska was able to cut the Duke lead to 3-1 just three minutes later after Jenna Cooper found Brittany Timko for a header from eight yards. At the end of the first stanza, Duke held a 9-4 advantage in shots.
The second half was much like the first as the Blue Devils outshot the Huskers 12-2, but was unable to add to their 3-1 advantage. For the game, Duke outshot Nebraska 21-6.
Picking up her third straight victory in goal was senior Thora Helgadottir, who collected three saves in 90 minutes of action. The Blue Devils now own eight different players with at least one goal on the season, while averaging 4.0 goals a contest as a team.
Duke will next play 24th-ranked Kentucky on Sunday at 12 p.m. on the final day of the Nike Carolina Classic.
