Duke Women's Tennis Opens Season With 6-1 Victory Over Baylor

DURHAM, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team opened the season with a 6-1 victory over 32nd-ranked Baylor on Saturday and will next battle 12th-ranked Vanderbilt (3-0) on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Senior Amanda Johnson became the 15th player in Duke history to register 100 wins on the afternoon.
The Blue Devils (1-0) opened the match by taking the doubles point as the Duke duo of Parker Goyer and Jennifer Zika defeated Iva Mihaylova and Izabela Mijic, 8-0, at the No. 3 slot and fifth-ranked Johnson and Tory Zawacki knocked off Steffi Balzert and Daria Potapova, 8-2, at No. 1.
In singles play, fifth-ranked Johnson cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Carolin Walter at the top spot to improve her career singles record to 100-25. Her career win percentage of 80.0 is the second-best in school history behind four-time All-American Vanessa Webb (86.6).
Zika, a freshman from Wels, Austria, gave the Blue Devils a 3-0 advantage as she defeated Balzert, 6-4, 6-2, at the second position and 95th-ranked Julia Smith clinched the victory for Duke with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Mihaylova at the No. 5 slot.
Junior 91st-ranked Saras Arasu knocked off Klara Zrustova, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, and freshman Kristin Cargill beat Izabela Mijic, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0.
