Ninth-ranked Duke Downs 15th-ranked Kentucky, 6-1

LEXINGTON, KY-The ninth-ranked Duke women's tennis team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 6-1 victory over 15th-ranked Kentucky on Saturday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky.

In doubles action, Duke took two of the three matches to take a 1-0 advantage into singles play. The Blue Devil duo of Saras Arasu and Julia Smith cruised to an 8-3 victory over Kim Coventry and Christine Simpson at the third position, but Duke's fifth-ranked tandem of Amanda Johnson and Tory Zawacki were upset, 8-5, by Sarah Foster and Aibika Kalsarieva at the No. 1 slot.

The doubles point came down to the second position and two Duke freshmen, Kristin Cargill and Jennifer Zika, pulled out a 9-7 victory over Lara Maurer Joelle Schwenk to give the Blue Devils the momentum going into singles play.

Duke continued rolling in singles as 89th-ranked Tory Zawacki won her first collegiate dual match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Schwenk at the third slot and fifth-ranked Johnson defeated 23rd-ranked Kalsarieva, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1.

Kentucky got on the board from the fourth position as Maurer knocked off Duke's 95th-ranked Smith, 6-3, 6-4, but the Blue Devils were able to pull out victories at No. 5 & No. 6 to clinch the 6-1 victory. Junior Saras Arasu, ranked 91st nationally, won 6-1, 6-2, over Simpson and Cargill defeated Coventry, 6-3, 7-6.

Duke (2-1) will next play 25th-ranked Texas A&M (1-1) on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
