LOS ANGELES, CALIF.-- Six different Duke University women's tennis players will open play on Saturday in the 2004 Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-America Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. Senior Saras Arasu, senior Katie Blaszak, junior Lauren Archer, sophomore Kristin Cargill, sophomore Tory Zawacki and freshman Clelia Deltour all will play in the prequalifying singes from Oct. 2-4 at UCLA.
Both Arasu (4) and Zawacki (5) are seeded in the prequalifying round and will go up against Cassy Fabiani of Washington and Elizabeth Lumpkin of UCLA, respectively, in the first round. Other matchups for the Blue Devils include Archer versus Rachel Porsz of Long Beach State, Blaszak versus Mimi Rinaudin of Mississippi, Deltour versus Chelsea Nusslock of Wisconsin and Cargill versus Eva Dickes of Pepperdine.
Duke sophomore Jennifer Zika will also play in the qualifying round beginning on Oct. 5 and junior Jackie Carleton will play in the main draw beginning Oct. 7. The main draw will be played in Pacific Palisades, Calif., at the Riviera Tennis Club.
In doubles action, three tandems for Duke will battle in prequalifying beginning on Saturday. The duo of Zika and Deltour will play Kolbovic/Svanfeldt of Washington, Arasu and Archer will battle Baker/Fermin of LMU and Cargill and Zawacki received a bye in the first round.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
Duke has posted two singles players win the title at the Riviera All-America over the last four years as Ansley Cargill won in 2000 and Kelly McCain in 2002.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships include 128-singles player and 64-doubles team prequalifying tournaments played October 2-4 at UCLA. These feed into 64-player and 32-doubles team qualifying tournaments October 5-6 at Riviera. The 32-player, 16-doubles team main draw takes place Oct. 7-10. Over 60 schools from across the country will be sending players to compete. Among the Los Angeles area schools competing will be: UCLA, USC, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and UC-Irvine.
California's Raquel Kops-Jones beat Erin Burdette of Stanford 6-3, 6-2, in last year's singles final to become the first African American woman to win a national collegiate singles title at the NCAA Division I level. Vanderbilt's Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos topped Northwestern's Grier and Jessica Rush 8-6 to win the doubles title. Tsoubanos became the first player to win two ITA All-American doubles titles (she won the 2002 title with Sarah Riske).
