DURHAM, N.C.-- The Duke defense continued its stellar play and the Blue Devil offense chipped in three goals as 10th-ranked Duke collected a 3-0 victory over N.C. State (7-5-2, 1-5) on Tuesday at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils registered their NCAA-best 10th shutout of the season and improved to 11-3 overall, 4-1 in the ACC.
"We knew that we needed to be patient, play harder and we would be able to find some goals tonight," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "The team collectively made a decision to come out and win this game in the second half. I was proud of how we came out and played in the second half. I am very happy to have a 3-0 victory over N.C. State as they are a very tough team and don't allow many goals in league action."
In a first half that featured an 11-1 shot advantage by the Blue Devils, no balls would drop in goal for the high-scoring Duke offense. In the best scoring opportunity of the half with 15 minutes remaining, Blue Devil sophomore Lauren Tippets sent a corner kick in from the left side to junior Heidi Hollenbeck, who tried to send the ball in the net but the Wolfpack defense sent the attempt out.
After a rousing halftime speech from Church, the Duke offense came out firing at the net and notched a goal just 1:33 into the stanza. Junior Carolyn Ford picked up her second goal of the season from 18 yards out, off assists from senior Casey McCluskey and junior Carolyn Riggs.
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the home squad for the next 24 minutes before sophomore Rebecca Moros sent a perfect corner kick into the box where Hollenbeck headed in her fourth goal of the season past N.C. State goalkeeper, Megan Connors. The assist for Moros was her seventh of the season, which is a team-best.
Moros would not be left off the scoring column on Tuesday evening-- in a play that was set up by sophomore Sarah McCabe being taken down by a Wolfpack defender on the left side of the goal box, Moros was able to bend a right-footed blast into the goal and off the hands of Connors. The goal was the fourth of the season for the midfielder.
"In the second half, we moved better off the ball, we played aggressively on the defensive end and we finished," said Moros.
Picking up the victory in net for the Blue Devils was freshman Allison Lipsher, who improved to 7-3 overall. The shutout was her sixth of the season and drops her goals against average to 1.05 in 11 contests.
Duke picked up its fourth league victory of the season, which matches a career-best for Church in his four years with the Blue Devils. For the game, the Blue Devil defense held the Wolfpack to one shot, while Duke posted 22.
The Blue Devils will next host Clemson on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and then Virginia Tech on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
