WAIKOLOA, HAWAII - The sixth-ranked Duke women's tennis team kicked off spring break in Waikoloa, Hawaii with a 6-1 victory over 18th-ranked Notre Dame on Wednesday at the Hilton Waikoloa. The Blue Devils improve to 7-1 on the season and winners of six straight matches, while Notre Dame falls to 7-2.
Duke took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches as Amanda Johnson and Saras Arasu defeated Alicia Salas and Lauren Connelly, 8-4, at the second position, while Jennifer Zika and Kristin Cargill knocked off Kristina Stastny and Sarah Jane Connelly, 8-4, at No. 3. Notre Dame took the first position as 37th-ranked Catrina Thompson and Christian Thompson defeated Tory Zawacki and Julia Smith, 8-6.
In singles action, Duke dominated play taking the second through sixth positions and winning 6-1. The only loss came at the top slot with Notre Dame's 13th-ranked Salas upset fifth-ranked Johnson, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Notching wins at the second and third slots were freshmen Zika and Zawacki. Zika, a naive of Wels, Austria defeated Christian Thompson, 6-3, 6-1, while Zawacki upset 84th-ranked Catrina Thompson, 7-5, 6-2.
At No. 4, Smith pulled out a 7-5, 6-2 win over Lauren Connelly, Arasu defeated Stastny, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5 and Cargill cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Sarah Jane Connelly at the sixth position.
Duke will next take on 36th-ranked Tennessee on Friday at 2:00 p.m. (EST) in Hawaii.
