Women’s Tennis Set for ITA All-American in Cary

DURHAM, N.C. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championship will kick off this weekend at Cary Tennis Park in Cary. The Duke women's tennis team will feature all nine team members competing in the pre-qualifying, qualifying and main draw rounds Sept. 19-27.
In Saturday's pre-qualifying singles action, senior Eleana Yu, junior Ava Krug and senior Shavit Kimchi will see action in singles.
The singles qualifying rounds open Monday with freshman Nina Vargova and sophomore Claire An earning selections. Duke's four main draw selections are tied with Ohio State for the most among all teams, with junior Irina Balus, sophomore Aspen Schuman, junior Liv Hovde and freshman Mimi Xu competing.
Duke will feature two doubles teams in the qualifying round with Balus and Kimchi teaming together along with Yu and An. The Blue Devil tandems of Xu and Vargova along with Schuman and Hovde will be in the main draw.
The Blue Devils enter the weekend with five singles players ranked – Balus (No. 7), Schuman (No. 31), Hovde (No. 58), Vargova (No. 79) and Xu (No. 81). Vargova and Xu were also No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, in the newcomer rankings.
In the ITA preseason doubles rankings, Duke has four teams ranked -- Vargova and Xu (No. 1), Schuman and Hovde (No. 18), Balus and senior Shavit Kimchi (No. 51) and sophomore Claire An and senior Eleana Yu (No. 61).
Duke has had success in the past at the ITA All-American Championship with Vanessa Webb (1996) and Ansley Cargill (2000) winning singles titles.
During the ITA All-American, 10 singles players will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (eight main draw quarterfinalists and two feed-in consolation finalists). Meanwhile, five doubles teams will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the All-American Championships (four main draw semifinalists and consolation champion).
Admission is free for all fans.
