Duke Advances To ACC Championship With 4-1 Win Over Florida State

RALEIGH, N.C.- For the 17 straight year, the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team will be playing in the finals of the ACC Championship on Sunday after knocking off 26th-ranked Florida State, 4-1, on Saturday at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.
The Blue Devils improve to 19-3 overall and will next take on top-seeded Clemson (21-3) on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. for the title. Duke is looking for its 16th title out of the last 17 years.
Duke continued its stellar play in doubles by taking two quick matches to earn the much-needed point. The Blue Devil duo of Tory Zawacki and Julia Smith defeated Mihaela Moldovan and Roxanne Clarke, 8-4, at the top position, while Jennifer Zika and Katie Blaszak posted an 8-4 win over Cordell and Christinia Denny at No. 3.
In singles, Smith netted a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Clarke at the fourth slot to kill any chance of the Seminoles gaining momentum. Then, ninth-ranked Johnson posted a 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 win over Anca Dumitrescu and Kristin Cargill downed Alina Mihhailescu, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions, respectively, to clinch the match for Duke.
"Today, Julia got a quick win in singles for us which didn't allow Florida State to get going early," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "Tomorrow against Clemson, we have to get off to a good start in doubles and gain the momentum early."
The only loss for the Blue Devils was at the second position as 92nd-ranked Zika fell, 7-5, 6-1, Moldovan.
Duke and Clemson will play on Sunday for a rematch of just a week ago when the Tigers defeated the Blue Devils, 5-2, in Durham, N.C.
