ATHENS, GA.- The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team had its run at the 2004 NCAA Championship come to an end on Friday as the Blue Devils lost, 4-0, to top-ranked Stanford at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
The Blue Devils conclude the season at 22-5, while Stanford improves to 26-0 and will face Vanderbilt in the NCAA Final Four.
Stanford took the early lead by winning the coveted doubles point with victories at the second and third slots. The Cardinal duo of Amber Liu and Alice Barnes picked up an 8-3 win over Amanda Johnson and Saras Arasu at the second slot. Then, 56th-ranked Emilia Anderson and Anne Yelsey posted an 8-2 win over Jennifer Zika and Katie Blaszak at No. 3.
The Blue Devils did not back down after failing to win the doubles point as three different Duke players won the first set, but with Stanford needing only three victories, the Cardinal's were able to pull out the needed wins to clinch the 4-0 victory.
Seventh-ranked Lui downed eight-ranked Johnson, 6-3, 6-1, at the first position to give Stanford a 2-0 lead. Then, 10th-ranked Barnes defeated 112th-ranked Zika, 6-1, 6-2 and 40th-ranked Theresa Logar knocked off Arasu with a 6-1, 6-2 victory to clinch the match.
Kristin Cargill was leading 6-3, 2-1 for the Blue Devils over 60th-ranked Anderson and Duke's Blaszak was leading 56th-ranked Barnikow, 6-2, 1-0, before the match was clinched. Zawacki, a freshman from Union, N.J., won the first set, 6-3, over 23rd-ranked Burdette, but lost the second set 6-2 prior to the match being stopped.
The Blue Devils will return everyone except for Johnson for the 2004-05 season.
