WILMINGTON, N.C. - In the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, six different Duke women's tennis players are listed in the rankings released on Friday. The Blue Devils listed in the rankings are Jackie Carleton (19), Jennifer Zika (68), Saras Arasu (96), Tory Zawacki (100), Julia Smith (101) and Katie Blaszak (116).
Arasu and Zawacki also kicked off the 2004-05 season with wins in the Landfall/UNC Wilmington Invitational. Arasu defeated Alex Smith from ECU, 6-1, 6-0, while Zawacki knocked off Lucia Henkle of Mount Olive, 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, Arasu/Zawacki defeated Lisa Suggs/Kate LaCoste of UNC Greensboro, 8-3.
Carleton, who is Duke's highest ranked player, is a two-time All-America transfer from UCLA. A native of Jenkintown, Pa., Carleton has posted 44 singles wins over the last two years and led the Bruins to the NCAA Final Four last season.
As a freshman last season with the Blue Devils, Zika collected a 21-14 singles mark and was ranked 97th in the nation at the end of the 2003-04 campaign. A native of Wels, Austria, Zika also notched a 15-10 doubles record last season.
One of Duke's two seniors on the 2004-05 squad, Arasu has collected 74 singles wins over the last three years with the Blue Devils. A Tampa, Fla., product, Arasu has been nationally ranked each of her three years at Duke.
A sophomore from Union, N.J., Zawacki was an All-America selection last season in doubles and was ranked as high as 89th last season in singles. She is coming off a season where she was 22-10 in singles and 21-14 in doubles.
The only junior on the Duke roster, Smith has been dealing with injuries ever since she arrived a Duke three years ago. A Windlesham, England native, Smith has battled through the injuries to be named All-ACC one season and post 52 doubles wins over her career.
Blaszak, a senior from Fairfax, Va., missed most of her junior campaign due to surgery on her shoulder. She made her season debut last season during the last week of the regular season, posting a 2-1 singles and 6-2 doubles mark.
