WILLIAMSBURG, VA.-- Four Blue Devil women's tennis player advanced to the third round of the William & Mary Invitational on Friday in singles action as Clelia Deltour, Saras Arasu, Lauren Archer and Parker Goyer each picked up two victories during the first day of action at the Busch & Adair Tennis Courts.
In her college debut, Deltour picked up a win in default and then knocked off Joelle Good of Marshall, 6-4, 6-0, while 96th-ranked Arasu improved to 5-0 on the season with victories over J.J. Larson of Virginia Tech, 6-0, 6-3, and Dora Bechliwanis of Virginia, 6-0, 6-2. On Saturday at 12:45 p.m., Duke's Deltour and Arasu will go up against each other.
Archer, a transfer from Rice, received a bye in the first round and then defeated Felice Lam of Virginia Tech, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4. She will battle Rachel Del Priore of Virginia on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. Goyer, a sophomore from Birmingham, Ala., knocked off Christine Kansky of Princeton, 6-4, 6-4, and Alex de Guzman of William & Mary, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to face Kristen Dunbar of William & Mary at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday.
Three of Duke's other four players lost in the first round on Friday as Kristin Cargill lost, 6-3, 6-7, 5-7, to 73rd-ranked Anat Elizari of Virginia Tech, 19th-ranked Jackie Carleton fell 3-6, 1-6, to Megan Moulton-Levy of William & Mary and 68th-ranked Jennifer Zika lost 7-5, 1-6, 3-6, to 84th-ranked Szilvia Szegedi of Boston College. Sophomore 100th-ranked Tory Zawacki won her first match of the day, 6-2, 6-0, over Darcy Robertson of Princeton before falling to Diana Srebrovic of Virginia, 2-6, 0-6. All four players who lost will play on Saturday in the consolation bracket.
In doubles, the tandem of Zika and Arasu picked up one victory on the day after receiving a bye in the first round. The duo defeated Stern/Wink from Virginia, 9-8, while the team of Cargill and Zawacki fell to Szegedi/Waseem of Boston College, 6-8.
Duke's final doubles team of Deltour and Goyer received a bye in the first round before knocking off King/Robertson of Princeton, 8-3. They will next take on Dunbar/Yang from William & Mary on Saturday at 8:00 a.m.
