Durham, N.C. - No. 8 Duke will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on No. 4 Virginia in an ACC game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils are fourth in the ACC with a 2-1-1 conference record while the Cavaliers remain undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record to lead the pack. Duke came off their 3-1 loss to Maryland to post their fourth shutout of the year with a 2-0 victory against Western Illinois on Tuesday. The win improved the Blue Devils to 8-2-1 overall. Virginia has a five game unbeaten streak and are 8-1-2 with eight shutouts on the season.
Series History
Duke and Virginia have met 74 times in men's soccer with the Cavaliers holding a slight 35-32-7 advantage. The two squads met three times last season with Virginia taking two of those matches. They hosted the first meeting and beat the Blue Devils 3-2 in overtime. They met again in the first round of the ACC Tournament with Virginia advancing with a 3-1 win. However, Duke took revenge in the NCAA Tournament, coming away with a 3-0 victory in Charlottesville to advance to their fifth College Cup.
Last Year's Meetings
(10/23) - In the regular season game, Duke took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but Virginia came back to score twice in the final 3:30 of regulation to tie the game. Mike Littlefield then gave UVA the victory with a header in the 7th minute of overtime. Spencer Wadsworth scored Duke's first goal in the sixth minute and Blake Camp made it 2-0 on a penalty kick. Hunter Freeman forced overtime when he converted on a penalty kick with 1:04 left in regulation. (11/10) - In the ACC Tournament, the game was scoreless at halftime but the Cavaliers scored two consecutive goals in the 64th and 67th minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Blake Camp cut the lead in half with a goal at the 69:41 mark but Ian Holder sealed the win with a goal in the 78th minute for a 3-1 win. (12/4) - Duke came out firing in the NCAA Tournament with two goals in the first half. They went on to advance to the College Cup Final Four with a 3-0 shutout victory. Danny Kramer and Tomek Charowski both scored in the first half and Spencer Wadsworth finished with a goal and an assist in the win. Justin Trowbridge made three saves for the shutout as Duke tied a school record with their 13th shutout of the year.
The Opponent
Virginia has used a strong defense to jump out to an 8-1-2 record on the year. Their defense, keyed by goalkeeper Ryan Burke, has recorded eight shutouts and only allowed eight goals in 11 games. They are riding a five-game unbeaten streak with four wins and one tie since a 3-0 loss to Old Dominion on Sept. 21. Duke is the second of three teams who played in the final four last year that Virginia will face this season. They tied UC-Santa Barbara 0-0 to start their season and they will play at Maryland on Oct. 19. UVA is led by Burke who has a 0.69 goals against average and a .795 save percentage. Yannick Reyering and Adam Cristman lead the offense. Reyering has eight goals and one assist while Cristman has seven goals and three assists.
History vs. ACC opponents
Against the other eight schools currently in the ACC, Duke holds a 177-163-30 all-time mark. They have been most successful against Wake Forest and North Carolina State with a .559 winning percentage against the Demon Deacons and a .647 winning percentage against the Wolfpack. The ACC has won ten National Championships, including four straight from 1991-94 and eight-of-11 from 1984-94. Duke won the 1986 National Championship, Virginia has five titles, Clemson has two and both Maryland and North Carolina each have one crown.
Last Time Out
The Blue Devils bounced back from a 3-1 loss to Maryland on national television with a 2-0 shutout victory over Western Illinois on Tuesday. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Duke. Zach Pope got credit for his second game-winning goal of the year when he beat the defense to a long ball put in to the Leathernecks' zone by Tim Jepson. The goal was the third of the year for Pope. Duke held an 8-1 advantage in total shots in the first half. After halftime, Blake Camp tallied his fourth goal of the year in the 52nd minute. The Blue Devils countered off a corner kick and Pope found Camp in the middle of the field. Camp went one-on-one with the lone defender and he drove past him at midfield for a breakaway shot that he sent past the goalkeeper.
First Goal
Tomek Charowski scored his first goal of the 2005 season, tying the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 60th minute against Maryland. Charowski missed the first six games due to an injury, but has since returned to add a goal and an assist in four games to Duke's potent offense. In his freshman season, he was fifth on the team with 20 points. He scored five goals and assisted on ten others. His ten assists tied for second on the squad.
Balanced Attack
Duke has had several different players step up and contribute on offense this season. They have eight different players who have scored goals with seven of those scoring at least twice. They also have 15 different players who have recorded assists on goals with 11 of those tallying two or more on the year. Five different players have recorded double digit points. Loftus leads the way with 18, Wadsworth has 15, Mike Grella and Camp both have 12 and Michael Videira is at 10 points.
Cards
Freshman Mike Grella sat out the Western Illinois game after being issued a red card in the second half of Duke's 3-1 loss to Maryland on Friday. Grella is second on the team with four goals and tied for third with four assists. He is the second Blue Devil to miss a game due to a red card. Paul Dudley sat out the temple game after receiving the red card at Virginia Tech.
Scoring Offense
Duke was seventh in the nation in scoring offense heading into their non-conference contest with Western Illinois. They are now averaging 2.55 goals per game and have scored at least two goals in nine of their 11 games this season. The only two times they have failed to score twice was in a 4-1 loss to St. John's and in their 3-1 loss to Maryland. They have scored three goals against Saint Louis, the College of Charleston, Wake Forest, Longwood and Boston College. They also tallied a season-high five in a win over Temple.
Defense Assists
The Blue Devils have a pair of defenders who are tied for third on the team with four assists. Kyle Helton and Danny Miller have been able to help the team out on scoring plays. Helton has recorded an assist in each of the last two games while Miller had assists in the first two games of the season. Three other defenders have one assist each. Tim Jepson and Ryan Pascioni each recorded their first assists of the year against Western Illinois and Barnes also has one this year.
NCAA Leaders as of 10/10
Chris Loftus is tied for 20th in the country with an average of 1.8 points per game and he is tied for 16th with an average of 0.8 goals per game. Spencer Wadsworth is ranked tied for ninth with an average of 0.7 assists per game while Michael Videira is averaging 0.6 assists per contest to rank tied for 20th. As a team the Blue Devils are ranked seventh in the nation in scoring offense with 2.6 goals per game and 17th in winning percentage with a .750 mark.
ACC Leaders as of 10/10
Duke leads the ACC in several statistical categories. They are first with 17.5 shots per game, 9.4 points per game, 2.6 goals per game, and 4.2 assists per game. They also have several individuals among the leaders in the conference. Chris Loftus is tied for seventh in shots per game (2.90), third with 18 points and tied for third with eight goals. Blake Camp is tied for seventh with 2.9 shots per game. Michael Videira is tenth with 2.8 shots per game and tied for fourth with six assists. Spencer Wadsworth is eighth with 15 points, tied for tenth with four goals, tied for second with seven assists and tied for second with three game-winning goals. Mike Grella is tied for tenth with four goals.
National Rankings
The Blue Devils dropped in the rankings this week after a loss to No. 11 Maryland on Friday. They are now ranked eighth in the College Soccer News Top-30, ninth by Soccer Times and tenth in the Soccer America Top-25. The Blue Devils fell from No. 8 to No. 15 in the NSCAA/adidas National Poll. Duke also dropped one spot to No. 3 in the Top Drawer Soccer Top-40.
Tale of Two Halfs
The Blue Devils have been the first team to put a goal on the board in eight of their ten games this season. So far this year, the Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 15-1 in the first half. The only goal they have allowed in the first half came against Wake Forest. Duke also holds a 85-25 advantage in total shots in the opening stanza. However, in the second half they have been outscored 14-11 despite holding an advantage in total shots, 89-66. Duke has outscored their opponents 2-0 in overtime games with wins against Charleston and Wake Forest in extra periods.
