CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Duke women's tennis players will make up half of the doubles quarterfinal competitors Sunday at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships at North Carolina. All four Blue Devil pairs who remained at the start of Saturday's competition defeated Atlantic Coast Conference opponents to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals, where they will continue to compete for a championship and a bid to the ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 3-6. In the singles competition, fourth-seeded Jackie Carleton advanced to the quarterfinals as well.
Top-seeded Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson did not disappoint Saturday, claiming an 8-6 victory over Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic from host UNC. The tandem of freshman Melissa Mang and junior Jennifer Zika also pulled out a win over a UNC team, upsetting seventh-seeded Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith, 8-2.
The young duo of sophomore Clelia Deltour and freshman Tara Iyer also earned an upset, defeating the eighth-seeded pair from N.C. State, Alejandra Guerra and Barbara Orlay, 8-4. Sixth-seeded Kristin Cargill and Carleton won 8-3 over Wake Forest's Ana Jerman and Christian Tara.
In singles, Carleton won two matches to move on to the quarterfinal round, posting victories over Guerra (6-4, 6-3) from N.C. State and Clemson's Maria Brito (6-1, 6-2), seeded ninth. Carleton faces Wake Forest's Alexandra Hirsch Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
