Durham, N.C. - No. 4 Duke will step outside conference play for a match with Stony Brook on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils are coming off an impressive 6-0 conference win against No. 11 N.C. State last Friday. Five of their six goals came in the first half as Duke recorded their highest goal output of the season and fourth shutout of the year. The Seawolves also had a shutout in their last game, winning a narrow contest with Vermont, 1-0. The win gave Stony Brook seven shutouts this season.
Series History
This marks the first ever meeting between Duke and Stony Brook.
The Opponent
Stony Brook is currently second in the America East Conference. They are 9-3-3 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play. After a loss and a tie to start the season, the Seawolves won four straight games before suffering a 1-0 setback to Columbia on Sept. 18. They have since gone 5-1-2 with the only loss coming one week ago in a 1-0 contest with Binghamton. They have only allowed 13 goals in 15 games with seven shutouts this year. Leading the way for the Seawolves is Michael Palacio. He leads the conference with 19 points, is second with six goals and tied for second with seven assists. He is also tied for the league-lead with three game-winning goals. Chris Megaloudis also has seven assists for Stony Brook and E.J. Xikis is 7-3-1 in net with a 0.80 goals against average, a .833 save percentage and three shutouts.
History vs. the America East Conference
Duke currently holds a 3-1 all-time record against the nine teams currently in the America East Conference. The last time they faced a team from the America East was in 1999 when they defeated UMBC, 4-3, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The win evened Duke's record against the Retrievers as UMBC won 2-0 against the Blue Devils in 1978, the year before John Rennie took over as the head coach at Duke. The Blue Devils hold a 1-0 record against both New Hampshire and Vermont. They took down Vermont, 5-2, in the adidas-Adelphi Classic in Garden City, N.J. The victory was part of a undefeated regular season for Duke in 1982 as they went 22-0-2 before losing to Indiana in eight overtimes in the National Championship game. The Blue Devils beat New Hampshire 3-2 in 1994 in the Metlife-adidas Soccer Classic in Durham.
Last Time Out
Duke played perhaps their best game of the season when they scored five goals in the first half and defeated No. 11 N.C. State, 6-0, last Friday. Danny Kramer led the way for Duke with two goals. Chris Loftus tallied his team-high ninth of the season on his first career penalty kick. Pavelid Castaneda scored his first career goal with a header. Michael Videira had a goal and two assists while Tomek Charowski and Mike Grella also each tallied a pair of assists. Justin Papadakis made one save to record his fourth shutout of the season. Blake Camp found the net for the game's first goal giving him two game-winners on the year.
North Florida Game Cancelled
Duke's non-conference match with North Florida, scheduled for Nov. 1, has been cancelled. Due to the hurricanes in Florida, North Florida has been forced to postpone some of their conference games and those games will be made up next week.
Duke vs. Ranked Teams
With the 6-0 win over N.C. State, Duke improved to 3-3 against ranked teams this season, including a 2-2 record against ranked ACC squads. They went on the road and defeated No. 25 Saint Louis University, 3-1, in their second game of the year. They suffered a 4-1 loss at home against No. 7 St. John's on Sept. 11 but came back the next week to defeat No. 13 Wake Forest, 3-2 in overtime. They went on to lose two straight against ranked teams with a setback on national television to Maryland, 3-1, and a 1-0 loss at Virginia. The Blue Devils bounced back from the Virginia loss with the 6-0 win against N.C. State. The next ranked opponent will be No. 8 North Carolina on Friday. The game will be televised nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel at 8 p.m.
Scoring Offense
Duke is seventh in the nation in scoring offense heading into the contest with Stoney Brook. After putting six goals on the board against the Wolfpack, the Blue Devils are averaging 2.62 goals per game and have scored at least two goals in ten of their 13 games this season. The three times they have failed to score twice was in a 4-1 loss to St. John's, in their 3-1 loss to Maryland and in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Virginia. They have scored three goals against Saint Louis, the College of Charleston, Wake Forest, Longwood and Boston College. They also tallied five in a win over Temple and a season-high six last Friday against N.C. State. The shutout loss to Virginia was the only time this season Duke failed to score a goal in a game.
Red Cards
Duke has four players who have received red cards this season. Kevin Stevenson was the last one to do so when he was carded after playing just three minutes in the Blue Devil's 6-0 win over N.C. State. He will be forced to sit out the Stony Brook game. Other Duke players who have been hit with the red card are Paul Dudley at Virginia Tech, Mike Grella against Maryland and Spencer Wadsworth at Virginia.
Two Assists
Three different players recorded two assists in the Blue Devil's 6-0 victory in their conference match with N.C. State last Friday. Tomek Charowski recorded two assists in his first start of the season to give him three on the year. The two assists for Mike Grella give him six in his first year of collegiate soccer. Michael Videira helped out on two goals to give him a team-high eight on the season, tied for the fourth most in the ACC.
Lofty Goals
Junior captain Chris Loftus is having a banner year for the Blue Devils. He scored a goal on his first career penalty kick in the first half against N.C. State to extend his team-high total to nine goals on the year. The defensive midfielder scored at keast one goal in seven of the first eight games and had a streak of four straight games with a goal come to an end at Boston College. The Blue Devils are 7-0-1 when Loftus finds the back of the net. He also has set a new career-high with 34 shot attempts. He scored the game-winning goal in the Long Island and Longwood games. He also scored the game-tying goal at Virginia Tech with 1:31 left in regulation while Duke was playing a man down.
Penalty Kicks
The penalty kick taken by Chris Loftus in the win over N.C. State was the third of the season for Duke. They have converted two-of-three this year. Blake Camp scored on a penalty kick at Virginia Tech but had his attempt thwarted against Maryland. The try for Loftus against N.C. State was his first career penalty kick attempt.
Shutouts
The Blue Devils recorded their fifth shutout of the season when they blew out N.C. State, 6-0, at home last Friday. Justin Papadakis recorded his fourth shutout of the year with one save in the contest and fifth of his career.
Pair of Goals
Danny Kramer scored two goals in Duke's 6-0 win against N.C. State last Friday. He joined Blake Camp and Chris Loftus as one of three players this season to score twice in a game for the Blue Devils.
National Rankings
Duke jumped from No. 16 to No. 4 this week in the NSCAA/adidas Top-25. They moved up five spots to No. 5 in the soccertimes.com Top-25 poll and four slots to No. 6 in the Soccer America Top-25. They are also ranked seventh by College Soccer News and third by Top Drawer Soccer.
Dominance in First Half
The Blue Devils have been the first team to put a goal on the board in ten of their 13 games this season. So far this year, the Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 20-1 in the first half. The only goal they have allowed in the first half came against Wake Forest. Duke also holds a 102-38 advantage in total shots in the opening stanza. However, in the second half they have been outscored 15-12 despite holding an advantage in total shots, 100-80.
