PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. ? Duke women's tennis players Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson had a successful first day in the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament. Bercek advanced to the Round of 16 with a win in the singles first round, while the pair of Bercek and Robinson moves on to the quaterfinals after winning their first match Thursday.
Bercek and Robinson, the 11th-ranked duo in the ITA preseason rankings, upset fourth-ranked Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova of Virginia Commonwealth, after slipping into the main draw from the alternate list. Bercek and Robinson will take on the team of Lucia Sainz and Kathrin Winterhalter of Fresno State in Friday's quarterfinals.
In singles action, fifth-ranked Bercek, a transfer from UCLA, earned a decisive victory over William & Mary's Megan Moulton-Levy, 6-3, 6-2, and will compete in the Round of 16 for the second straight year. Bercek faces Wisconsin's Caitlin Burke Friday in hopes of cracking into the quarterfinals of the All-American singles bracket for the first time in her career.
