CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Junior Kristin Cargill and freshman Jessi Robinson both posted wins over Miami women's tennis competitors Sunday at North Carolina's Kitty Harrison Invitational to close out the 2005 fall season. Cargill topped Emily Mowery, ranked 86th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason poll, 6-2, 6-4, and Robinson defeated Ana Rupic, 6-1, 6-2.
Robinson and freshman Melissa Mang both fell to ranked opponents, as Patricia Starzyk (No. 106) pulled ahead of Robinson, 7-6, 6-3, and Melissa Applebaum (No. 98) outlasted Mang, 6-1, 4-6 (10-7). Freshman Tara Iyer dropped a 6-4, 6-2, decision to Aubrey Banada, and junior Parker Goyer fell 6-4, 6-3, to Caren Senauth.
The six singles matches closed a three-day slate for the Blue Devils against opponents from North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Furman, Minnesota and Miami. Overall, Duke put together an 8-1 doubles ledger and a 9-9 singles record.
The tournament was the last in the fall schedule for Duke, but the Blue Devils will return to action for their regular season at the Freeman Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Jan. 13-15.
