DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 2 Duke women's basketball team opened the game on a 23-0 run and ended it on a 19-0 run while also outscoring Ball State 68-24 in between for a 110-24 victory Monday here at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The 86 point victory is the largest in Duke history as the Blue Devils improve to 8-0 while the Cardinals drop to 6-3.
Senior Monique Currie scored nine points in the run to open the game en route to a game-high 18 to go along with seven rebounds and six assists. Junior Alison Bales played a perfect game, shooting 5-of-5 from the field and 8-of-8 from the line for 18 points and she also grabbed 12 rebounds and had seven blocks, as well.
Laura Kurz added 15 points for the Blue Devils and Mistie Williams 12. Wanisha Smith also reached double figures with 11 points while Chante Black and Jessica Foley each scored nine and Lindsey Harding had eight points, six assists and four steals. Black added 10 rebounds and three blocks to her total.
Every Blue Devil scored at least four points while Ball State was led by Tina Bolte's six. Each of the 10 players that saw action played at least 18 minutes and nobody saw more than 22 minutes of action in the contest.
After the 23-0 run that opened the game, Duke also had runs of nine, eight and seven in between scores for the Cardinals in the first half before ending the half on a 5-0 run for a 57-9 halftime advantage.
Currie outscored the Cardinals in the first half 11-9 while Kurz matched their total with nine points of her own. Ball State missed its first 16 shots of the game and shot just 3-of-33 in the first half for a .091 shooting percentage. Duke on the other hand shot 22-of-41 (.537) from the field in the first stanza.
Duke opened the second half by scoring the first 10 points all on lay-ups as the Blue Devils extended that run to 15-0 within the first two and a half minutes. Duke had a 12-0 run midway through the second half and the game-ending 19-0 run was over the final 6:16 of the game.
Duke shot 20-of-29 from the field in the second half while Ball State hit on 6-of-38 second half field goals. For the game, Duke hit the 60-percent mark from the field, making 42-of-70 while Ball State hit on just 9-of-71 shots, including 3-of-23 from behind the arc. Duke hit 7-of-19 three-pointers and 19-of-21 free throws and also doubled-up the Cardinals on the boards, 62-31.
Next up for Duke is a home game Thursday against Colorado State. The Rams and Blue Devils will tip off at 7 p.m. ET at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
