DURHAM, N.C. ? Abby Waner recorded game-highs with 23 points, six assists and four steals as the No. 2 Duke women's basketball team defeated the Colorado State Rams 99-52 Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Abby Waner also hit a Duke freshman record five three-pointers as she and pulled down five rebounds, as well. Duke improves to a perfect 9-0 while Colorado State falls to 5-4.
The Rams played the Blue Devils tough in spurts on the night and the score was 13-12 in Duke's favor six minutes in before they went on a 10-0 run to push the lead to double-figures. A 23-0 run near the end of the first half took Duke's lead from 14 to 33 and Duke was up 54-18 at the half.
The Blue Devils opened up the second half strong and after Emily Waner's second three-pointer and an Abby Waner lay-up, Duke held its big lead at 80-28. At that point in the game, the Waner sisters, from Highlands Ranch, Colo., were outscoring their home-state Rams 29-28.
Colorado State did go on a 10-0 run at that point in the game but would never pull to closer than 40 the rest of the way as Duke had a 9-2 run to end the game with a 47-point, 99-52 victory.
Wanisha Smith and Mistie Williams added 13 apiece for the Blue Devils while Alison Bales scored 11 points and had seven rebounds. Monique Currie and Lindsey Harding scored eight apiece while Laura Kurz and Chante Black finished with seven. Black added a team-high eight rebounds for Duke while Harding had six assists in and four rebounds of her own.
The Rams were led by Melissa Dennet's 16 points and 10 rebounds. Dennet at one point had 14 of the Ram's 24 points.
Up next for Duke is a break for the holidays before they return to action at the Surf' N Slam Classic in San Diego Dec. 28-30. Duke will face St. John's on Dec. 28 at 11 p.m. ET and face either Montana State or San Diego on Dec. 30.
Duke's next home game will be against Wake Forest on Jan. 2 at 11 a.m. ET.
