TEMPE, ARIZ.- Eighth-ranked Duke continued its three-match spring break road trip on Monday at 28th-ranked Arizona State (4-4) and improved to 9-3 on the season with a 4-3 victory over the Sun Devils on a warm and windy afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz.
"The conditions were tough as it was very warm and windy," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "With conditions like that, we talked about our mental toughness--being tough and to not let the elements bother you."
For the third match in a row, Duke lost the doubles point as Arizona State's 25th-ranked tandem of Lauren Colalillo and Kady Pooler defeated Jackie Carleton and Jennifer Zika, 8-5, at No. 1. Then, Sabrina Capannolo and Jessica Leitch downed Duke's Saras Arasu and Katie Blaszak, 8-4. The third match was suspended after the Sun Devils clinched the doubles point.
Duke was able to put the doubles play behind them and came out to win at the fourth slot as Arasu quickly defeated Leitch, 6-1, 6-0, in only 45 minutes. Then, Carleton won her second straight dual match as she defeated Joslynn Burkett, 6-2, 6-2, at the second position to give Duke a 2-1 lead.
Arizona State came back to tie the match, 2-2, as Colalillo posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kristin Cargill at No. 6 and then moved ahead, 3-2, with a 6-3, 6-4 victory by Pooler over Zika at No. 3.
The match came down to freshman Clelia Deltour at No. 5 and Blaszak at No. 1 to pull out victories for the Blue Devils. Deltour was able to finish off Wendy Pilecka in three sets, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3, to even the match, 3-3. Then, Blaszak, a senior from Fairfax, Va., won the first set, 7-6, but Capannolo of Arizona State responded to win the second, 7-5. In the final set, Blaszak took control and was able to win 6-3 as she improved to 15-5 overall and 10-2 in dual match play.
"In singles, we did a good job of being tough," said Ashworth. "With Saras getting the quick win was big for us. In doubles, we have a lot of work to do."
Duke will continue its three-match spring break trip on March 18 at UNLV at 4:00 p.m. (EST).
