Final Stats
Sophomore midfielder Peter Lamade scored a career-high four goals and third-ranked Duke used a 6-0 run in the second half as the Blue Devils earned a 12-10 victory over 15th-ranked North Carolina in ACC men's lacrosse action in front of 2,786 fans at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Blue Devils improve to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the league while the Tar Heels fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Duke's 7-0 start to the season is the program's best since 1999 when the Blue Devils put together nine straight victories to open the year. The win also snaps a three-game losing skid to the Tar Heels.
"Give Carolina a lot of credit," said Duke head coach Mike Pressler. "I was very impressed with their plan to slow the tempo. Ryan Blair gave us all kinds of problems. We obviously made some adjustments at halftime."
North Carolina jumped on top 3-1 after one quarter of play, slowing the pace of the action offensively. Blair scored a pair of unassisted goals in the quarter, including one with just seven seconds remaining.
In the second period, Ryan Walterhoefer's goal at the 12:06 mark pushed the Tar Heel lead to 4-1, but Duke answered with goals by Lamade and Dan Flannery to get within one. Jed Prossner, who was held in check most of the afternoon by Duke's Tony McDevitt, got free for an unassisted goal with just under five minutes remaining to make the score 5-3, but Matt Danowski set up a tally by Flannery at the 2:18 mark to pull the Blue Devils back within one goal. Blair then sent the teams into intermission with North Carolina ahead by two with his third goal of the day at the 1:04 mark.
After Duke's Matt Zash won the opening face-off of the third quarter, Lamade scored an unassisted goal, and then followed with his third of the game less than three minutes later to knot the score at 6-6 with 11:37 remaining.
Then the scoring fireworks began as the two teams combined for four goals in a span of 34 seconds. The Tar Heels received tallies from Andrew McElduff and Mike McCall at 9:56 and 9:43 of the quarter, but the Blue Devils responded with goals by Danowski and Lamade at the 9:31 and 9:22 marks. Duke then took its first lead of the game when Fred Krom dodged from behind the net and beat Tar Heel goalkeeper Paul Spellman high for an unassisted goal and 9-8 Blue Devil lead at the 3:53 mark.
The Blue Devils continued their spurt into the final quarter when Flannery scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage and scored with 13:26 left. Bret Thompson followed with an unassisted goal at 11:13 before Duke put the game away when Zack Greer scored the Blue Devils' sixth consecutive goal on an assist from Danowski at the 4:41 mark. Greer's goal -- his NCAA-leading 24th of the year -- began at the defensive end, where goalkeeper Aaron Fenton made a save and quick outlet to Thompson, who found a streaking Nick O'Hara, who rifled a sharp pass to Danowski on the left side of the goal. Danowski then fed Greer, who had plenty of time to fake Spellman and shovel the ball into the net.
North Carolina ended its dry spell of just under 23 minutes with an extra man goal by Walterhoefer at the 1:53 mark, and Bryant Will's goal with just 14 seconds left closed out the day's scoring.
Lamade's goal-scoring was crucial to the Duke offense as the Chevy Chase, Md., native snapped a three-game pointless streak. The four goals bettered his previous high of three set last season versus both Maryland and North Carolina. In two career games against the Tar Heels, Lamade now has seven goals and two assists. Danowski finished the day with two goals and three assists while Flannery chipped in two goals and two assists.
"We certainly got a huge lift from Peter Lamade," Pressler stated. "We were really impatient last week against Loyola, and I thought we did a pretty good job of staying patient on offense today as Carolina slowed things down."
The Duke defense was spearheaded by McDevitt, who limited Prossner to just one goal on two total shots. A preseason First Team All-America pick, Prossner was coming off a five-goal effort versus Hofstra on Wednesday night and entered the weekend with 99 career goals including 41 last year as a junior. The Blue Devils, who received 12 saves from Fenton in the net, also got a second half lift from Casey Carroll. Injured last week against Loyola, Carroll entered the game in the second stanza and allowed David Evans to shift to Blair, who was limited to two assists after halftime after producing three goals and one assist in the opening 30 minutes.
Also for the Blue Devils, Zash contributed one goal and one assist, won six-of-11 face-offs and secured a team-high five ground balls.
The win gives Duke one point in the annual battle for the Carlyle Cup, an all-sports competition between the Blue Devils and Tar Heels. North Carolina now holds an 11.5-6.5 current lead. The title sponsor of the event is Carlyle & Co., a North Carolina-based jeweler.
Duke will host Vermont on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
