BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Duke senior
Max Sloat recorded a hat trick to give him 100 career points in a 9-7 loss to seventh-ranked Cornell in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
Cornell (7-3) outscored 11th-ranked Duke (8-3) 5-2 in the third quarter to pull away for the victory. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter as the defenses stood tall. Cornell goalie Matthew Tully made 12 saves to anchor the Big Red defensive effort.
How it Happened
- Cornell scored just 45 seconds into the game and had the clamps on the Duke offense for much of the opening quarter. The Big Red added another goal at the seven-minute mark to make it 2-0 before Sloat put the Blue Devils on the board with 55 seconds left.
- Benn Johnston tied the game 45 seconds into the second stanza, rifling a shot past Tully.
- The Blue Devils grabbed their first lead of the afternoon on a man-up score from Brady Scioletti four minutes later.
- The Cornell scoring drought stretched to 13:03 before the Big Red scored twice in a span of 1:44 to regain the 4-3 lead at the midway point of the second quarter.
- Sloat and Scioletti answered for the Blue Devils, scoring their second goals of the game 44 seconds apart to launch Duke back in front, 5-4.
- Neither team could find a goal in the final six minutes of the half, sending the Blue Devils into the break with the 5-4 advantage.
- Cornell got off to a fast start in the third quarter, scoring three goals in the opening 4:38 to jump ahead 7-5. The Big Red tallied markers just six seconds apart before opening their largest lead of the day on a Brian Luzzi goal at the 10:22 mark.
- Sloat pulled Duke within one moments later for his 100th career point, but two of the final three goals of the quarter came off Cornell sticks to make it a 9-7 game in favor of the Big Red. Sloat fed Liam Kershis on extra man to cap the scoring in the third quarter.
- Defense was the story of the fourth quarter as neither team scored over the 15 minutes. Duke outshot the Big Red, 8-5, in the period, but the five turnovers hampered the Blue Devils as they tried to rally for the win.
- Patrick Jameison had eight saves and two ground balls in goal. Duke outshot Cornell, 43-36, and both teams picked up 26 ground balls. Ben McCarthy was solid at the faceoff dot, winning 8-of-13 and picking up four ground balls.
