Box Score
It was an all-out team effort as the Blue Devils dominated Stanford, 18-1, Saturday at Vanderbilt's Lacrosse Complex to improve their record to 8-2 on the season heading into next weekend's conference clash against Virginia. Tewaaraton trophy candidates Katie Chrest and goalie Meghan Huether anchored Duke on both ends of the field for the balanced win.
Chrest dominated offensively with five goals and two assists, while Huether tallied 44:24 of shut-out play before being replaced by Regan Bosch between the pipes with under 16 minutes to play in the game. Seven other players scored for the Blue Devils, with Jessica Adam and Katie Laschinger each tallying a hat trick in the win.
Duke outscored the Cardinal 10-0 in the first half and held them scoreless for the first 18:09 in the second half, limiting an opponent to one goal or less for the first time since a 15-0 shutout of Denver in the 1998 season.
Both teams started the game slow with neither team scoring for the opening 8:02 of action before Duke's Rachel Sanford converted on a pass from Kristen Waagbo to start the scoring spree. Starting with Sanford's tally, the Blue Devils scored seven goals in 10 minutes to blow the game open 7-0 with 12:34 to play in the first half. Chrest scored three times in that stretch and added one more down the line before the Blue Devils headed into the lockerroom with a 10-0 margin at the half.
After five Duke goals in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza, including two from Laschinger, increased the lead to 15-0, Stanford got on the board with a goal by Megan Burker with 11:52 to play. Jessica Adam tallied two of the last three goals for the Blue Devils to account for the final 18-1 score. The 17-goal margin of victory is the largest for the Blue Devils since they knocked off Vanderbilt by a score of 22-2 in 2001. Additionally, the 18 goals scored are the most since a 2003 meeting against UMBC when Duke won by an 18-4 spread.
The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Apr. 2 with a 1:00 p.m. game against Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
