DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Tewaaraton trophy candidate Katie Chrest led the Blue Devils for the second-straight game, scoring six goals to tie the school record for goals in a game and lead fourth-ranked Duke passed William & Mary 17-8 Friday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. With the win, Head Coach Kerstin Kimel earned her 100th victory as a Blue Devil, in addition to guiding her squad to a 4-0 start on the season.
Twenty-nine Blue Devils saw action against William & Mary, with eight different players tallying points and numerous others putting in strong performances on defense. Duke caused 11 of the Tribe's 16 turnovers and limited their attack to just 19 shots in the game, while the Blue Devil front line put up 42 shots on the day. Redshirt freshman Rachel Sanford tallied three caused turnovers on defense, as well netting her sixth goal of the season, while junior goalie Megan Huether earned five saves against limited action between the pipes.
Duke attacked hard early, putting the first tally on the board just two minutes into the game off an unassisted goal from freshman Caroline Cryer, while sophomore Kristen Waagbo converted on a pass from Chrest just over a minute later. Over the next 4:40, Duke scored on four free position shots of William & Mary fouls to go up 6-0. Tribe Head Coach Tara Brown pulled starting goalkeeper Debby Petracca with the Tribe down by five in favor of Amanda Roth, who would go on to make eight saves on the day.
Waagbo found the back of the net for the second time in the game to put the Blue Devils up 7-0 with 19:30 to play in the first half before the Tribe's Emily Vitrano scored her first goal of the year to put William & Mary on the board. After another goal from the opposition, Duke went on a 5-1 run to close out the half with a 12-3 lead.
Though scoring in the second half was more balanced, the Blue Devils tallied four of the first four five goals in the period, including two from Cryer and Chrest's sixth goal of the day. After William & Mary's Morgan Lang and Waagbo traded goals, the Tribe went on a 3-0 run to close the game, giving Duke the 17-8 victory.
Freshman goalie Regan Bosch came in with 1:42 to play in the game to make her first career save as a Blue Devil and hold the Tribe scoreless for the remainder of the game.
The Blue Devils return to action Sunday, Mar. 6 against Richmond at 1:00 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium. The Spiders are currently 0-1 after dropping their season-opener to Maryland, 14-6, on Thursday.
