Attackmen Matt Danowski and Dan Flannery scored six goals apiece to lead second-ranked Duke to a 19-9 win over seventh-ranked Army as 3,737 fans looked on at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y.
The win pushes Duke to 13-1 on the year, matching the school single-season record for wins set by the 1999 Blue Devils. The Black Knights fall to 10-3.
After Army jumped on top 1-0 with John Walker's unassisted goal less than two minutes into the contest, the Blue Devils used a 3-0 run, receiving tallies from Flannery, Ryan Marshall and Matt Zash, to take the lead for good. Duke would lead 4-2 after one period and 8-6 at intermission.
The Blue Devils blew open the game in the third quarter behind Flannery as the Garden City, N.Y., native scored three goals in a 5-0 run that put Duke ahead 13-6 when Danowski scored with 6:54 remaining in the period. After Walker posted back-to-back goals to pull the Black Knights to within five, Danowski scored twice during a 6-0 Duke spurt that pushed the advantage to 19-8 on Ben Koesterer's tally with 3:38 left in the fourth quarter.
Danowski posted career-highs of six goals and nine total points in the contest, pushing his ACC-leading season point total to 62 on 34 goals and 28 assists. The point total matches the fourth highest by a Duke player in head coach Mike Pressler's 15-year tenure, trailing only John Fay (67 in both 1997 and 1998) and T.J. Durnan (63 in 2000). In addition, Danowski's 28 assists stand as the second best single-season total under Pressler behind Jim Gonnella's 32 in 1997.
Flannery established a career-best effort with his six goals while the eight total points matches his career single-game high set in 2004 against VMI. Flannery's six tallies increase his season total to 31, giving Duke three 30-plus goal scorers for just the second time in school history. Rookie Zack Greer registered just one shot attempt on the day, but managed to scored his ACC-leading 43rd goal of the year. The only other time Duke has had three players score 30 or more goals in a season was in 1998 with Fay (42), Durnan (36) and Jared Frood (31).
The attack unit of Danowski, Flannery and Greer also became the most prolific scoring trio in the Pressler Era with 164 combined points, surpassing the group of Fay, Durnan and Frood who together posted 163 points during the 1998 season.
Duke goalkeeper Aaron Fenton recorded five saves before giving way to Dan Loftus, who picked up one save over the final 6:27. Sophomore defenseman Casey Carroll provided a lift for the Blue Devils with 10 ground balls, six caused turnovers and his first assist of the year.
For the Black Knights, Walker scored five goals and added one assist to lead the way. Army utilized three goalies on the day with Matt Darak recording nine saves and starter Adam Fullerton six.
Next up for Duke is the ACC Tournament and M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore where the top-seeded Blue Devils will play fourth-seeded North Carolina on Friday night at 6 p.m. The other semifinal pits second-seeded Virginia against third-seeded Maryland, with the championship game set for Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
