Maryland goalkeeper Harry Alford made 15 saves and Joe Walters scored three goals to lead the 10th-ranked and third-seeded Terrapins to a 9-5 win over second-ranked and top-seeded Duke in the ACC Tournament championship game played in front of 5,681 fans at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
The Blue Devils, making their fourth appearance in the tournament finals in the past five seasons, fall to 14-2 on the year. It marked just the second game this season that Duke was held to less than 10 goals. Maryland, the league tournament champion for the second straight year, improves to 8-5.
Duke claimed a 2-0 lead in the opening period with goals by Kyle Dowd and Dan Flannery, but the Terrapin defense then held the Blue Devils scoreless over the next 40:16 and took a 6-2 advantage in the process. After Matt Danowski's goal at the 13:04 mark of the fourth period cut the lead to 6-3, Maryland scored three unanswered goals for a 9-3 margin. Peter Lamade and Flannery tallied for Duke over the final three minutes to account for the final margin.
"First off, I'd like to congratulate the University of Maryland for winning the ACC Tournament championship," Duke head coach Mike Pressler said. "We didn't play very well on the offensive end, and Maryland certainly had something to do with that."
Flannery's two goals led Duke while Danowski contributed one goal and three assists. In goal, Aaron Fenton was credited with 12 saves.
Danowski, Fenton and Zack Greer represented Duke on the all-tournament team and were joined by Alford, Walters, Maxwell Ritz (Maryland), Xander Ritz (Maryland), Ray Megill (Maryland), Will Dalton (Maryland), Andrew Schwartzman (Maryland), Michael Culver (Virginia), John Christmas (Virginia) and Ryan Blair (North Carolina).
Duke will await the NCAA Tournament selections which are set for Sunday, May 8.
