COLLEGE PARK, MD. ? The Duke women's tennis team will be represented in both the singles and doubles championships of Flight A Sunday at the Maryland Invitational. The Blue Devils wrapped up their second day Saturday with junior transfer Daniela Bercek and the doubles team of Bercek and freshman Jessi Robinson advancing to the finals.
Bercek's singles victory was bittersweet, as it came over sophomore teammate Clelia Deltour, 6-1, 6-0. Bercek is the top seed in Maryland's A bracket, and both Blue Devils are nationally ranked ? Bercek is the No. 5 player in the country, while Deltour is 99th. Deltour will face the No. 2 seed in the bracket, Ramona But of host Maryland, Sunday in a consolation match. Bercek plays the third seed, Ekaterina Bull in the championship match.
On the doubles court, Bercek and Robinson, the 11th-ranked pair in the NCAA, defeated Yale's team of Janet and Aimee Kim, 8-2, to move on to the championship game. The top-seeded duo of Bercek and Robinson will play second-seeded Marianne Baker and But of Maryland in the final.
In the Flight A doubles consolation bracket, senior Lauren Archer and junior Parker Goyer defeated Burdull and Maria Ring of Washington State, 8-2, to advance to the finals where they will match up with Lauren Connelly and Kiki Stastny of Notre Dame.
Robinson continued play in the singles consolation bracket for Flight A, falling to Kiki Stastny of Notre Dame, 6-2, 6-2. Goyer pulled out a close win in Flight B's consolation semifinal over West Virginia's Stacey Percival, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and will play Kelly Nelson of Notre Dame in that final.
