DURHAM, N.C. -- Six members of the Duke women's tennis team will compete in two different tournaments in California this weekend. Sophomore Jennifer Zika and freshman Tara Iyer will see their first fall 2005 action at the Cal Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., beginning Friday, while four Blue Devils begin play at the pre-qualifying round of the All-American Tournament Saturday in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Zika and Iyer will both compete in the main draw of the Gold Singles Division. Zika faces Brigham Young's Sophia Holden at 1:30 p.m. EDT Friday with the winner advancing to a 5:30 p.m. match in the Round of 16. Iyer begins her collegiate career with a match against Tina Razloznik of Arizona at 4:15 p.m. EDT. The winner will play at 6:30 p.m.
Zika and Iyer will also team up in the doubles competition, playing at the No. 3 position in the Gold Doubles Division. The pair will face Andrea Morgado and Gloriann Lopez of Texas Christian at noon Friday.
While Zika and Iyer are playing in Berkeley, senior Kristin Cargill, sophomore Clelia Deltour and freshmen Melissa Mang and Jessi Robinson will be preparing for their 10-day slate at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Tournament in Pacific Palisades. All four will participate in the pre-qualifying round Saturday and Sunday in hopes of advancing to the qualifying round. Deltour and Mang will team up in doubles in addition to playing in the singles bracket.
Each singles individual and doubles team must win three matches to advance to the qualifying tournament, which will take place Tuesday and Wednesday. The main draw will be held Thurs., Oct. 6 - Sun., Oct. 9.
