DURHAM, N.C. - Home sweet home. The Duke women's basketball team played at Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time in two weeks after a four-game road trip and celebrated the occasion by defeated local rival N.C. State 77-57 Thursday night in ACC action.
Duke improves to 18-0 overall and 6-0 in the ACC and it now prepares for a match-up of the nation's top two teams as No. 1 Tennessee visits Cameron Indoor Monday. The Wolfpack fall to 11-5 and 2-3 in the ACC as they have dropped three of their past four games.
Monique Currie led the Blue Devils with 20 points while Chante Black (11) and Lindsey Harding also reached double figures. All 11 players that saw action scored as Abby Waner added nine, Alison Bales and Wanisha Smith six apiece, Jessica Foley five, Mistie Williams four and Emily Waner, Laura Kurz and Carrem Gay two each.
Harding added a game-high seven assists while Williams reached double figures in rebounds with 10. Bales and Black each recorded four blocks for the nation's best blocking team while Foley led Duke with three steals.
After the Wolfpack scored the game's first basket, Duke quickly countered with a 9-0 run to go up by seven less than three minutes into the game. Currie scored the game's first seven points with two long two-pointers and a three-pointer in that run.
The Duke lead remained just under double digits until Abby Waner hit a three-pointer that spurred a 7-0 run and Duke led 24-11 mid way through the first half. Another Abby Waner triple gave Duke its big lead of the half at 39-23 and Duke held a 39-27 lead at halftime.
N.C. State opened the second half on a 12-4 run and cut the Duke lead to four at 43-39 before Duke scored seven straight and 11 of the next 13 points to hold a 54-41 lead. After a three-point play by the Wolfpack, Duke went on a 19-6 run to put the game out of reach and give Duke its big lead at 73-50 with four minutes remaining. Duke would hit its free throws down the stretch for the 20-point, 77-57 victory.
Duke will now gear up for the Lady Vols as the two teams have had some good games in recent years. Duke knocked off three-time defending national champion Tennessee on March 22, 1999 by a score of 69-63 to advance to its first Final Four in school history while a season ago, Duke collected a 59-57 victory at Tennessee becoming just the seventh team to defeat the Lady Vols in Thompson Boiling Arena.
Tennessee defeated Duke 72-69 the last time it visited Cameron Indoor Stadium despite some late heroics from Alana Beard, who became the first player in Duke history to have her jersey retired in a pre-game ceremony.
