DURHAM, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Blue Devils placed an ACC-high five players on the three All-ACC Men's Soccer Teams on Monday. Junior midfielder Michael Videira and sophomore forward Mike Grella were named to the first team, while senior defender and captain Kyle Helton and junior forward Spencer Wadsworth earned spots on the second team. Freshman midfielder Joshua Bienenfeld was placed on the All-ACC Freshmen Team.
Videira has been Duke's field general this year, running the offense from the center midfield position. He has tallied five goals and six assists this season for 16 points. Videira has started the 14 games that he has played in this year, while logging 1031 minutes. It is Videira's third straight year of making an All-ACC team, and he is the only returning All-ACC team member for the Blue Devils.
Grella has been an offensive force to be reckoned with in his second year as a Blue Devil. His 10 goals are tied for third in the ACC this season, and he has added three assists as well. Grella has started all 17 games for Duke this year, while accumulating 1052 minutes in the process.
Helton earned his place on the All-ACC second team through his hard work as a defender in his senior year. The captain from Alpharetta, Ga., often plays on the left side of the defensive line, and locks down on opponents' most dangerous scoring threats. Helton has totaled three assists on the year, and played 1261 minutes while starting 16 of 17 games for the Blue Devils.
Wadsworth leads the ACC with 11 assists in his junior campaign, and has also found the back of the net on his own six times. Although only starting 12 of 17 games for Duke this season, he has made the most of his time and managed to accumulate 1065 minutes. The Dallas, Texas, native has worked up front with Mike Grella to make the Blue Devils a formidable offensive threat.
Bienenfeld has become a key role player for Duke this season. On a team that relies very heavily on its junior class, Bienenfeld has not started a game as a freshman, but still played 587 minutes. He scored one goal and tallied one assist on the season, and figures to be a critical asset to the Blue Devils in years to come.
Duke's next match will be played at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the ACC Tournament in Boyds, Md., located just outside of Washington, D.C. The Blue Devils will face the winner of the Virginia Tech- N.C. State play-in game, which is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. Duke captured the top seed in the tournament after winning the regular season on a tie-breaker over Wake Forest.
