PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - The 25th-ranked duo of senior Daniela Bercek and freshman Elizabeth Plotkin upset No. 1-ranked Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen of North Carolina, 9-8 (11), on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The two are set to meet fourth-ranked Roxanne Clarke and Kady Pooler of Arizona State on Saturday. Clarke and Pooler were 8-1 winners over 27th-ranked Brook Buck and Kelcy Teft of Notre Dame in Friday's quarterfinals.
Bercek and Plotkin entered the All-American Championships in the qualifying round on Tuesday, Oct. 3, and have since beaten five nationally ranked teams. After opening the season with a loss versus 18th-ranked Shadisha Robinson and Gabrielle Duch of South Florida at the Gator Fall Classic in Gainesville, Fla., the two have won five consecutive matches and are now 5-1.
The duo's first victim at the prestigious All-American Championships was the 23rd-ranked team of Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks of Long Beach State, as they came away with an 8-3 on Tuesday. Bercek and Plotkin then secured a spot in the main draw bracket by posting two wins on Wednesday, defeating 38th-ranked Diana Srebovic and Lolita Frangulyan of Florida (8-6) and 45th-ranked Anna Lubinsky and Nicki Mechem of UCLA (8-2).
Sixth-ranked Bercek was set to compete in the main draw of singles competition at the All-American Championships, but an injury is permitting her to only compete with Plotkin in doubles competition. In 2005, Bercek came up just short of winning her first tournament in a Blue Devil uniform as she was defeated in the championship match by TCU's Nicole Leimback. Last year's doubles crown went to Notre Dame's Catrina and Christian Thompson, who are also in action in the semifinals in this year's tournament.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships is the first of three Intercollegiate Tennis Association national and singles and doubles championships of the 2006-07 season, along with the November 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and the year-end NCAA Championships.
