ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (AP) - Duke's lacrosse team finally returned to the field Saturday, playing a series of scrimmage games against opposing teams at a charity event on Long Island.
Duke had a two-hour scrimmage against Towson State, and later had one-hour scrimmages against Hofstra - where new coach John Danowski previously coached for 21 years - and Division II school New York Institute of Technology.
The scrimmage also featured Rutgers, BYU, Springfield College, and host school Molloy College. The event was for charity, which benefited the New York Police Athletic League's Special Needs unit.
"It was certainly an emotional day for all of us," midfielder Ed Douglas said. "I can see there's a bit of significance for us being out there, even if it's only a scrimmage. But after five weeks of scrimmaging against each other, it's nice to scrimmage against another color jersey."
John Danowski, with the blessing of top school officials, decided that when it came to media coverage, he and his players would not run and hide.
"We had five television crews and 23 media people overall on our first official day of practice," he said of his team's five-week training camp which started on Labor Day. "We've decided to be open and honest in our dealings, but we have to remember that the past is the past, and it cannot be changed. We're just trying to move forward."
Duke opens its regular season at home on Feb. 24 against Dartmouth. Its first road game is March 3 at conference rival Maryland.
