Head Coach Gail Goestenkors
Opening Statement:
“I was pleased with our energy. I feel we came out excited to play somebody else. I thought our defense overall was good but I think we rushed things offensively. We missed a lot of easy layups. That's something we will work on in practice. I'm hoping it's just the first game jitters. It's something we will work on in practice: finishing inside and being a little more patient. But overall I am pleased with our effort.”
On the additions of Bridgette Mitchell, Joy Cheek, Keturah Jackson and Brittany Mitch in to the lineup:
“I think the two freshmen [Mitchell and Cheek] are definitely going to help us. They have been able to catch onto the system very quickly. They give us additional depth in both the perimeter and the post. Having [Jackson] and [Mitch] back, they understand what it takes. Even though they did not get to play last year, they were at every single practice. There is just a little more maturity with those two. It's great to see them back on the court with us.”
On Chante Black:
“She is still rehabbing. She still hasn't practiced with us. She got hurt in the second practice of the year. She is looking better on the sidelines. I think she did some of the warm-up with us. We are hoping she will begin practicing with us next week.”
On the offense feeding off the defense:
“We want to be an up tempo team. It's a style players enjoy and I enjoy as well. I think the fans love that style of play as well. We constantly want to push the ball but we want to have the versatility that if the running game isn't there, then we can set up on the court and get a real good look at the basket.”
Sophomore Abby Waner
On the use of trapping the guards:
“We tried to not base our defenses on other teams. I think that trapping has always been something that Duke basketball has done and we're going to do that regardless of who we are playing. So right now it's a good time to start practicing it and working on it for when we do have quicker point guards. With the quickness of Lindsey [Harding] and Wanisha [Smith] up front I'm not really worried about the other point guards. Also, we have some work to do on out rotations because we can trap the ball but we need to make sure that we get our rotations back.”
On missing layups:
“I think it's when you tend to get up by a lot, sometimes you lose focus. That's something that we definitely need to work on because we can't afford to lose focus against better teams and miss layups like that.”
On steals in the game:
“As a guard group one of our focuses is ball pressure. We have assistant coaches constantly reminding us to put ball pressure on and then when you have such good ball pressure, it makes it a lot easier for steals because they're not as aware of where they're passing it.”
Senior Alison Bales
On her performance on offense:
“I think it was more focus for us. We worked on getting the ball into the post all preseason and I have to tell you, going against the girls in practice, our post players and our guys is extremely difficult. So to go out there tonight was a little different and refreshing.”
On executing on offense:
“I thinking playing games like tonight we tend not to have to execute as much, we didn't really run that many plays with a lot of screens. We didn't need to because we were scoring in transition off of our defense or offensive rebounds. I think as the season progresses we'll really have to work on our execution of plays and such.”
Freshman Bridgette Mitchell
On playing her first game in Cameron:
“It's exciting. A few early jitters but overall it was a lot of fun. I'm excited and I can't wait for more.”
Anderson Quotes:
Head Coach Jeff Dow
On Alison Bales' play:
“She's a tremendous player. I think there's a reason that she is on some of the watch lists for All-American candidacy and that type of thing. Obviously, she's a presence not only on the offensive end but also on the defensive end; she had eight blocked shots, 20 points, 10 rebounds and she's just a very complete player. Offensively, it's kind of hard to run some of your set plays with her presence down low, of course. At the same time, she plays very hard and it was a very impressive effort on her part.”
On Duke:
“Duke's obviously a terrific program. I think that they are going to have another incredible season, obviously a lot of talent. I think the thing, as an opposing coach, that really impressed me was how hard they play. They never let the score or the time of the game change their approach in any way. They just play tremendously hard and unselfish
