DURHAM, N.C. - Junior captain/defender Tim Jepson and junior midfielder Michael Videira were placed on ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District Teams for their success on the playing field and in the classroom this year. Jepson was named to the second team, while Videira claimed first team honors. There are eight districts in the country, and Duke is in District 3, which includes the southeastern Atlantic states. Requirements for the honors are a 3.2 GPA and excellence on the soccer playing field. Videira is now eligible for the national Academic All-American team.
Jepson, who hails from Yorba Linda, Calif., has been solid this year for the Blue Devils on defense. He has started all 20 of Duke's games, and has accumulated a team high 1706 minutes played. Jepson scored the first two goals of his career in Duke's regular season games against Virginia and N.C. State. He was also named to the All-ACC Tournament team last week after his strong performance in Duke's three games enroute to the tournament title.
Videira, a native of Milford, Mass., has been at the center of Duke's success all season long. He has tallied six goals and six assists, and has started in all 17 games he has been able to play in. Videira was named the ACC Tournament's Most Valuable Player on Sunday for his efforts in Duke's championship run, and was honored by being placed on the All-ACC First Team for the regular season. It is the third year in as many played for Videira that he was named to an All-ACC team. He was named a Preseason First Team All-America by College Soccer News and Soccer America, and has twice been named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News. Videira was among 25 players named to the preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List, which is the award given to the best college soccer player each year. All of this has happened despite Videira missing three games due to injury late in the season.
Duke's next match with be on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Men's College Cup. The Blue Devils will face the winner of the Adelphi-Brown game being played this weekend, as they look to avenge their second round NCAA Tournament exit last year at the hands of Creighton. If Duke continues to win, they would host the third round on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 1:00 p.m. and the quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 1:00 p.m. The 2006 NCAA Men's Soccer Final Four will be held in St. Louis, Mo., on Dec. 1 and 3.
