DURHAM, N.C. - The Division I Women's Southeast Region rankings were released on Dec. 8, with three Duke singles players - two freshmen and one sophomore - and two Blue Devil doubles tandems making the list.
Freshman Elizabeth Plotkin claims the highest spot for Duke in the regional listings, coming in at No. 15. The San Francisco, Calif., native went 3-3 in singles play this fall and combined with senior Daniela Bercek to post a doubles record of 5-4; a record that included a semifinal appearance at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, which landed the duo a bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Plotkin and Bercek are the second-ranked doubles team in the Southeast Region, as the two rank 25th in the national preseason rankings. Bercek ranks sixth in the nation among singles players.
Freshman Amanda Granson ranks 21st in the Southeast region, after posting a singles mark of 6-5 in fall competition. The Hilton Head, S.C., native won her last three of four matches, all in ITA Southeast Regional play, advancing to the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Melissa Mang is listed at 26th in the regional rankings. The Metairie, La., native had a stellar freshman year in 2005-06, leading the Blue Devils in wins with 29, and posting a 29-10 overall record, including a 21-3 record in dual matches. She won eight of 10 matches against ACC opponents and posted a 4-1 record against nationally ranked foes. Mang finished the season at No. 71 in the ITA Rankings, and is ranked 55th in the preseason national listings.
Mang combines with classmate Jessi Robinson to form the 10th-ranked duo in the Southeast Region. The two went 5-2 in fall play; a mark that included a quarterfinal appearance in ITA Regional action. Mang and Robinson are ranked 46th nationally in the preseason listings.
Duke will be begin spring play at the Michigan Invitational, held Jan. 12-14 in Ann Arbor, with the Blue Devils' home opener set for Feb. 10 versus Indiana.
