DURHAM, N.C. - In response to Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong's decision Friday to drop rape charges in the lacrosse case, Duke President Richard H. Brodhead, Athletic Director Joe Alleva and Men's Lacrosse Coach John Danowski issued the following statements:
Duke President Richard H. Brodhead
“I am greatly relieved for the students and their families that the most serious of the charges has been dropped. Given the certainty with which the district attorney made his many public statements regarding the rape allegation, his decision today to drop that charge must call into question the validity of the remaining charges.
“The district attorney should now put this case in the hands of an independent party, who can restore confidence in the fairness of the process. Further, Mr. Nifong has an obligation to explain to all of us his conduct in this matter.”
Athletic Director Joe Alleva
"Today's actions by the district attorney appear to be another step in establishing the entire truth in this matter. I am very happy for David, Reade and Collin and their families, and am hopeful that the remaining charges will end with a similar result.
"Since its inception, the lacrosse program at Duke has achieved athletic, academic and public service success. In my mind, our student-athletes are outstanding representatives of Duke University who excel on the playing fields, serve the Durham community, perform well academically and graduate from the institution."
Men's Lacrosse Coach John Danowski
"We still believe in the truth and we believe the other charges are false. We will stand by these kids and their famalies until the whole thing comes to a conclusion."
