DURHAM, N.C. - The Tri-n-Give Tour, a collaboration between Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State to bring student-athletes from the Triangle-area schools together to help support agencies, communities and/or organizations in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill, got off to a fantastic start as two of the three projects for the school year are complete.
Duke diving coach Andy Scott served as event coordinator for Duke's project, which was a Walk a Mile ... Your Style to help Roger Herr middle school's fundraising efforts to support Uganda. Students at RHMS are trying to raise $5,000 to send to Uganda in effort to help youth suffering from the recent war there.
Duke's efforts helped raise about $1,000 toward the school's goal and Scott was please with the efforts of both Duke and North Carolina's student-athletes.
"It was incredible to see the Duke baseball and golf teams represented and to get the UNC gymnastics team involved was even more incredible," Scott said. "It's encouraging to see the school's teaming up to better the community."
Roger Herr middle school's efforts continue to help kids from Uganda.
A variety of student-athletes from both Duke and North Carolina then teamed up for Thanksgiving Craft Day with University of North Carolina Children's Hospital. Student-athletes visited with kids to make holiday crafts and were also able to interact in the Play Atrium at the hospital.
Duke student-athletes who particiapated included Leslie Hartford, Mallory O'Connell, Garrich Berberich, Jesse Sandburg, Lauren Gonzalez, Patti Frost and Nick Campisano from the swimming and diving teams, Alison Whitaker from the women's golf team and Christine Casey from the women's lacrosee team in addition to Daina Pucurs, Aana Wherry, Jenny Shull and Ali Hausfeld from the volleyball team.
The Tri-n-Give tour will conclude in Raleigh in the spring with a project tied in with the Make-a-Wish foundation.
