PALO ALTO, Calif. ? Duke's Daniela Bercek finished her stint in the 2006 NCAA Singles Championships at Stanford University, where she matched her career-best performance by making it to Friday's Round of 16. Bercek fell to Tatsiana Uvarova of Virginia Commonwealth Friday at the Taube Tennis Center, 6-2, 6-3.
Playing Duke's No. 1 position all year, Bercek led the Blue Devils to a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAA team championships before falling to top-ranked Stanford, who went on to win the title. Bercek stayed at Stanford, the site of both the team and individual championships, with senior Jackie Carleton to compete in the singles tournament. Carleton made it to the Round of 32, and Bercek matched her performance from last year by advancing to the Sweet 16.
The junior from Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro, wraps up the year with a 25-8 overall record. Carleton finished just shy of the 30-win mark Thursday after compiling a 29-9 mark for the year and a 19-3 ledger in team dual matches.
NCAA action continues at Stanford Saturday with the quarterfinals, and the final matches will be contested on Monday.
