Former Duke standout and current interim head coach Kevin Cassese and rising Blue Devil senior Matt Danowski combined for four goals and three assists to help the United States men's lacrosse team defeat Ireland, 27-2, at Radnor (Pa.) High School in its opening exhibition game on Sunday night.
The U.S. will play two more exhibition games before the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship begins on July 13 in Canada.
Cassese, a three-time All-America at Duke from 2000-03, had three total points on two goals and one assist while winning all eight of his face-off opportunities. Danowski, the 2005 ACC Player of the Year who will be a senior on Duke's 2007 squad, contributed two goals and two assists and is one of two alternates for the U.S. club.
The U.S. scored the first 12 goals of the game and completely dominated play, winning all 17 first half face-offs. After jumping out to a 6-0 lead after one quarter, the U.S. scored four goals in the opening 3:26 of the second quarter. Scott Urick paced the United States team with six goals and one assist while Michael Powell chipped in five goals and two assists. U.S. goalies Trevor Tierney and Chris Garrity each made three saves while allowing one goal.
The U.S. reports to training camp at Syracuse on July 2 and will next play on July 3 against a Central New York area all-star team at Syracuse's Coyne Field at 7:30 p.m. The U.S. team wraps up its exhibition schedule on July 6 in Boston against the Major League Lacrosse All-Stars.
