GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Six members of the 2005-06 Duke women's tennis team were honored with places on the inaugural 20-member All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team, ACC Commissioner John D. Swofford announced Tuesday.
Senior Jackie Carleton, junior Jennifer Zika, sophomore Clelia Deltour and the entire freshman class of Tara Iyer, Melissa Mang and Jessi Robinson made the team, which requires a student-athlete to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 as well as to have earned at least a 3.0 in the previous semester. Duke had the highest number of selections to the in the league.
Carleton, Mang and Iyer played at Nos. 2, 3 and 4, respectively for most of the season, helping lead Duke to a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Championships. Carleton, an All-ACC selection along with Mang, went on to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships, making it to the Round of 32. Mang was tabbed the ACC Freshman of the Year at the 2006 conference championships.
After recovering from wrist surgery, Deltour returned to the Duke lineup midway through the season, and she and Robinson anchored the lineup at Nos. 5 and 6 through the ACC and NCAA Championships. Zika played No. 1 doubles for most of the season, including the NCAA Championships.
Duke went 20-8 during the 2005-06 campaign and reached the NCAA quarterfinal for the 13th time in school history and the third time in the last four years.
