Former Duke standout and current interim head coach Kevin Cassese and Team USA cruised to wins in each of their first two games at the 2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships in Ontario, Canada, defeating Australia (Friday; 20-8) and England (Saturday; 25-5).
The United States, the defending world champion, faces Canada on Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.) in a game pitting Duke graduates on each sideline. While Cassese aids the U.S. cause, two former Blue Devils -- Taylor Wray and Ryan Marshall -- will suit up for the Canadians. The United States has won 34 straight games in ILF World Championship action, with the last loss coming to Canada in the 1978 gold medal contest.
“I'm looking forward to it,” Cassese said of the Sunday's tilt with Canada. “It's been a long time since I've been on the field with Taylor. This will be like playing with your brothers; you love them but you want to keep beating them. I hope Taylor and Ryan play really well, but not too well.”
The United States players feel the weight on their shoulders as defending champs.
“The pressure on us lies in the fact that we've won seven of the last eight world championships,” he said. “Everyone is gunning for us because we're the favorite. The crowds are against us. We have so many great players on the team, and we just have to match the intensity level of our opponents and we'll be fine.”
Cassese, who has seen most of his minutes come as a defensive midfielder, on face-offs and during man-down situations, highlighted Saturday's win over England when he successfully executed a fake flip, hidden ball maneuver with teammate Jay Jalbert and scored from 40 yards out.
The United States-Canada contest can be viewed live on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. on CSTV.
Another familiar face to Duke fans competing at the championship event is former Duke captain Dan Chemotti, who helped the Blue Devils to back-to-back ACC titles in 2001 and 2002. Chemotti plays for the Italian squad, and scored three goals in an overtime loss to Scotland on the first day of action.
