DURHAM, N.C. ? Senior Matt Danowski and graduate student Ed Douglas have been named captains of the 2007 Duke men's lacrosse team, announced on Friday by head coach John Danowski.
"Being elected a team captain by your peers is one of the highest honors a student-athlete can receive," John Danowski said. "I have a tremendous amount of confidence that Matt and Ed will represent themselves, their teammates, the lacrosse program and Duke University in the appropriate fashion."
Matt Danowski, an attackman from Farmingdale, N.Y., and the son of Duke's head coach, has started every game (41) since arriving in Durham prior to the 2004 season. He has 160 career points on 85 goals and 75 assists and earned first team All-America, National Attackman of the Year and ACC Player of the Year honors following the 2005 campaign. On Duke's all-time charts, Danowski, the 2004 ACC Rookie of the Year, ranks 13th in total points and 10th in assists. He has led Duke in scoring in each of his first three seasons with the Blue Devils and was the nation's leading scorer in 2005 after establishing a school single-season record with 92 points on 50 goals and 42 assists.
Douglas, a midfielder from Baltimore, Md., graduated from Duke in May of 2006 with a bachelor of science degree in biomedical en gineering and is currenly pursuing a master's degree in humanities. A former walk-on, Douglas has seen action in 31 career games for the Blue Devils with career totals of one goal, one assist and 27 ground balls. He was a key component as a defensive midfielder on Duke's 2005 squad that ranked third nationally in scoring defense as the Blue Devils went 17-3 and advanced to the NCAA championship game.
